10/13/08: This is not one of those Sigma vs. Canon or whatever is better then this or that reviews, and you won't see any technical charts here. Theresa and I love photography and shoot Canon, only because we've made a substantial investment in lenses. We currently (mostly) shoot with 30D and 40D bodies, and we know how to use our gear, but our priorities are creative possibilities, fun, and great memories. We put low noise at high ISO way before pixel count, and we love fast lenses that let us shoot with less noise at higher speed and less light.

We decided to give the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 a try, because it was supposed to be: fast, well built and wide. If you don't want to read any further, and it makes any difference, the lens is all those things and we love it. Now, if you're just getting into photography, you'll want to know that this isn't going to be your first, or one-and-only lens.

We had a vacation to Italy and Croatia in September. The Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 lens started shipping in late August, and we managed to get ours just a few days before the trip. I was really looking forward to trying out some wide angles in the narrow streets of Venice, but I had no idea just how much fun I was going to have with this lens.

Pros:
  • Very well built
  • Comes with a lens hood – unlike Canon's non L glass (Canon could just add whatever they charge for the hood to the price of the lens, and everyone would just pay, ..we'd also save more then a few trees in the process).
  • Fast, f2.8 11-16mm
  • Light weight and compact – compared to our other favorite lenses (Canon 70-200mm f2.8 USM IS, Canon f24-70mm f2.8 USL)
Cons:
  • Exposure to direct sunlight will create straight flares and less noticeable rainbow effects. This is an issue with all wide lenses, but it's worth pointing out. Despite the lens hood, you may have to use your hand or some other object to block direct light from entering the lens at certain angles.
  • There is some purple fringing, but it's not extreme and can easily be corrected in software if it bothers you.
Samples:
Here are the links to a few samples, but you can find plenty more if you browse the rest of our trip. Hope this helps you make a decision to buy or pass on this lens, ...and please, post your impressions.
