07/30/09: So full disclaimer - I love Harry Potter - I've read all the books, really enjoyed all the movies thus far. I was nervous about this one because the Half Blood Prince was my favorite book in the series. Turns out it was good but not great. There is so much in this book I knew they would have to leave out some interesting story arcs, but overall I think the movie was well balanced. Loved the focus on the budding relationships and the trials and tribulations of the teenaged heart (Ron steals the show imho) - especially since it plays such a critical role in the final acts. My biggest disappointment was that we didn't get to understand much about the half blood prince - it was mentioned in the beginning, forgotten about for most of the movie and thrown in as an answer at the end. The other disappointment was not seeing more of young Voldemort - mostly because that kid was so wonderfully creepy (acting genes are obviously hereditary). A great way to spend 2.5 hours and definitely worth the money to see on the big screen. |
