03/09/08: I was a Microsoft Windows user since the very beginning, but that has changed about 5 months ago – and it looks like I will never go back.
Ubuntu is an easy to use and mature operating system. It is free, and the range and quality of free applications that can be downloaded and installed is quite amazing.
You can download the OS for free and run it right from the CD. If you like it, you can then install it on the hard drive. I would not recommend the installation to those who've never installed an operating system, or those that have never even heard of Linux. If you do decide to install, make sure all the valuable files are backed up.
If you have access to a spare PC, you should try it. With a little patience, you can make it every bit as pretty and functional as a Mac.
